Orally, branched-chain amino acids are used to enhance exercise performance, prevent fatigue, improve concentration, and reduce protein and muscle breakdown during intense exercise. They are also used for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease), latent portosystemic encephalopathy, and chronic hepatic encephalopathy. Branched-chain amino acids have also been used orally to treat anorexia in cancer patients, tardive dyskinesia, McArdle's disease (a genetic glycogen metabolic disorder), spinocerebellar degeneration, and to attenuate muscle-wasting during bed rest.
Intravenously, branched-chain amino acids are used for acute hepatic encephalopathy and in conditions of high metabolic stress due to severe trauma or sepsis.
