Orally, evening primrose oil is used for premenstrual syndrome (PMS), mastalgia, endometriosis, and symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. It is also used orally for atopic eczema, psoriasis, acne, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, Raynaud's syndrome, multiple sclerosis, and Sjogren's syndrome. Evening primrose oil is also used orally for cancer, hypercholesterolemia and coronary heart disease, dyspraxia in children, intermittent claudication, alcoholism, Alzheimer's disease, and schizophrenia. It is also used orally for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS); asthma; diabetic neuropathy; neurodermatitis; hyperactivity in children and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); obesity and weight loss; whooping cough; and gastrointestinal disorders including ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and peptic ulcer disease. Evening primrose oil has also been used orally in pregnancy for preventing pre-eclampsia, shortening the duration of labor, stimulating labor, and preventing post-date deliveries.
In foods, evening primrose oil is used as a dietary source of essential fatty acids.
In manufacturing, evening primrose oil is used in soaps and cosmetics.
