Orally, beta glucans are used for hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, cancer, and HIV/AIDS. Beta glucans are also used orally as an immunostimulant in people with conditions that may compromise their immune system such as chronic fatigue syndrome, physical and emotional stress, and patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment. It is also used orally for colds (common cold), flu (influenza), swine flu, allergies, hepatitis, Lyme disease, asthma, ear infections, aging, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.
Topically, beta glucans are used for dermatitis, eczema, wrinkles, bedsores, wounds, burns, diabetic ulcers, and radiation burns.
Intravenously and intramuscularly, beta glucans are used for treating cancer and as an immunostimulant in patients with HIV/AIDS and AIDS-related disorders. It is also used intravenously for preventing sepsis in trauma patients after undergoing exploratory laparotomy or thoracotomy and for preventing infection in surgical patients.
Subcutaneously, beta glucans are used for treating and reducing the size of subcutaneous tumors resulting from malignant metastatic disease.
In manufacturing, beta glucans are used as a food additive in products such as salad dressings, frozen desserts, sour cream, and cheese spreads.
