Orally, oat bran and whole oats are used for hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, gallstones, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), hypertension, and preventing colon cancer and gastric cancer. Oats are also used for constipation, diarrhea, rheumatism, fat redistribution syndrome, fatigue, neurasthenia syndrome, opioid and nicotine withdrawal, and lowering uric acid levels. Oats are also used for acute or chronic anxiety, excitation and stress, weak bladder, connective tissue disorders, gout, kidney ailments, skin diseases, and as a tonic. Oat straw is used for the flu, swine flu, coughs, abdominal fatigue, bladder and rheumatic disorders, eye ailments, frostbite, gout, impetigo, and metabolic diseases.
Topically, oats are used for skin injury, pruritus, seborrhea, dry and itchy skin, weeping eczema, contact dermatitis, chickenpox, osteoarthritis, liver disorders, and in foot baths for chronically cold or tired feet.
In foods, oats are used as a grain or cereal.
In manufacturing, oats are a component of bath products and soaps.
