It is also used for improving pain, fatigue, and the alpha sleep anomaly in patients with fibromyalgia. GHB is also used orally as a sedative alternative to the dietary supplement L-tryptophan. As an orphan drug, GHB has been approved by the FDA for treatment of narcolepsy (improving nighttime sleep, and the auxiliary symptoms of cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations, and automatic behavior). Intravenously, GHB has been used as part of an anesthetic regimen, and to reduce intracranial pressure associated with trauma.
