There's a new warning to watch for metabolic acidosis in patients taking Topamax (topiramate).
This is even more important now that Topamax will be used for so many conditions other than epilepsy. It's gaining acceptance for tremors and weight loss. And Topamax will be approved for migraine prophylaxis.
Topamax inhibits carbonic anhydrase. This increases renal excretion of bicarbonate.
