New guidelines and antibiotics will improve treatment of skin infections, including methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA).

Consider the new Infectious Diseases Soc of America guidelines...and use these strategies to help decide when and how to treat.

For minor NONpurulent infections, start with a beta-lactam (cephalexin, etc) for 5 to 7 days to cover strep. Don't automatically add an antibiotic to cover MRSA...but switch to one later if needed.
